Total Credit Union Investments
With lending activity remaining strong, investment balances decline
As of December 31, 2016, credit unions held $371 billion in investments, down 2.5% from the 3rd quarter. As the chart below shows, total investments have followed the typical trend of gradually declining over the course of the year as lending picks up and deposit growth slows after the first quarter. Total credit union assets expanded 1.3% over the same period to $1.3 trillion, while loan balances increased at a faster rate of 2.7%, resulting in investment dollars continuing to be diverted to relatively higher yielding loan products.
