Balances rise due to seasonal share inflows
As of March 31, 2017, credit unions held $402.3 billion in investments, an 8.4% increase from the 4th quarter. As shown below, total investments increased as liquidity rose with share balances following their usual pattern of posting the strongest growth in the first quarter. Total credit union assets grew steadily to an all-time high of nearly $1.4 trillion. Investment balances are up, 3.4% versus the first quarter of 2016 while total assets expanded 7.9% over the period.
